Byron Shire high school student Monet Shortland presented a passionate speech on climate action for Community Newsroom that inspired a listener to contact her to launch a new youth environmentalist group.

It was Monet’s first time on Bay FM’s Community Newsroom and one of our beloved Bay FM listeners heard it and got in touch to see if Monet was interested in starting a local youth group devoted to the environment, in particular the local marine environment.

You may have seen Monet Shortland when she recently appeared alongside local listener Simone Rosela on the front page of The Echo announcing the launch of Ocean Voices.

Monet Shortland spoke with Rasela Torise of the Belly show who introduced Monet to community radio two years ago.
