Multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter, Ally Palmer, creates beautiful, heartfelt soulful-folk songs that reveal her enticing blend of vulnerability and strength. Ally is our latest star of “Short and Sweet”.
After touring Australia as a keyboardist for a range of bands and artists, Ally decided to take the plunge and pursue her original music. Since 2016, she has released two EP’s, her debut album, “Need You Around”, and is soon to release her second album “Take Me To The Water” in July this year.
Combining old school soul with smooth, moody and uplifting lyrics, there is a clarity and maturity that dazzles in Ally’s music and after chatting with her, it’s evident she’s also an inspiring and passionate woman.
What are your top 5 songs on rotation at the moment?
They Say I’m Doing Just Fine – Michael Kiwanuka,
To The Mountains – Lizzy McAlpine,
Do I Wanna Know – Hozier,
It Ain’t Me Babe – Bob Dylan,
Ain’t Got Nothing on You – Leon Bridges.
What do you love most about being a part of the Northern Rivers music scene?
I love how everyone is so supportive, from the locals, musicians and music lovers. Everyone is very engaged and keen to go out and see live music and support you. Which is what the world needs more of these days.
Biggest challenge you’ve faced in the music industry and how did you overcome it?
I think the biggest challenge I’ve faced is realising that there isn’t enough support for independent artists in Australia. It’s so hard to continuously keep pushing your music and reach a wider audience on your own, but it’s made me realise that no matter how much support there is I will always love creating and sharing my music with the world.
What does music actually mean to you and how has it influenced your life?
Music has been a massive part of my life and it brings me so much joy every day. Music has changed my life in so many ways but most importantly it has introduced me to so many friends that I wouldn’t have met if it wasn’t for music. There is no better feeling than playing music with your friends! It’s magic.
When you’re not making music, where can we find you?
You can find me in the surf.
