Independent Councillor Mark Swivel, who also fronts the smash hit Russian men’s choir Dustyesky, has successfully moved a motion to invite local Bundjalung mob to formally add their voices to Council. This follows another successful motion passed by Byron Shire Council at the 2022 Local Government NSW Special Conference by Councillor Sama Balson
‘Resolution 39’, calls on all NSW councils to develop a kit in partnership with traditional custodians so public forums can be held to inform the public about the Uluru Statement from the Heart and grow the groundswell movement within governments. As part of that journey, indigenous community stakeholders will form an advisory body to help Byron Council in its decision-making process by September 2024.
