Just over a week to go before the 2024 Byron Writers Festival kicks off for three stimulating days at the Bangalow Showgrounds. BayFM presenter Nell Schofield (AKA Roadtrip’s Big Nelly) is hosting two sessions and she’s also interviewed some guests in advance.
Booker Prize winning author Richard Flanagan spoke with her about his new book Chapter 7 – a complex web of biography, history and autobiography with the creation of the atomic bomb at its centre. She also interviewed Lyn Harwood, who co-wrote Black Duck – A Year at Yumburra, with her partner Bruce Pascoe.
Nell will also host two live sessions on the first day of the Festival (Friday August 9) – first up: True Crime with Matthew Condon and Gideon Haigh. What drew Gideon to the disappearance of nineteen-year-old nurse on an ocean liner in 1949? And what revelations have followed in the decade since Matthew’s incendiary Three Crooked Kings?
That session will be followed by a chat with Kon Karapanagiotidis who has written a Greek vegetarian and vegan cookbook called. ‘Philoxenia’, meaning to welcome a stranger. 100% of proceeds from the book go to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) which was founded by Kon’s mother, Sia. And you’ll even get a taste of some of the recipes!
Join Nell and a host of other fabulous speakers and authors under the trees at the Bangalow Showgrounds August 9 – 11. Check out the full program here.
