Benefits of bilingual schooling in the NT

Produced by Emma Carroll

Children achieve better results learning in their first language in the early years of education. This is the finding of a report released last week by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. The study challenges the Northern Territory government's plan to cut back on bi-lingual education where schools in areas where traditional languages flourish are being told they must teach in English, and English only, for the first four hours of classes. This is despite the language being foreign to its students. Interview with report author Dr Patrick McConvell.

CDEP Reforms - Hindrance or Help?

Produced by Hannah Chipperfield

The CDEP program was first introduced to remote indigenous communities as an employment creation, on-the-job training and income support scheme. Its characteristics allow indigenous people to work part-time for a minimum income with the ability to boost income through livelihoods such as arts production and sales. But now, according to some, indigenous peoples’ choices will be restricted and they are limited to either participating in the mainstream economy or receiving welfare. From the July 1, no new CDEP jobs will be offered and existing positions will be phased out over the next two years. The Rudd Government’s reforms have met strong criticism from indigenous community leaders and politicians alike. Featured in this story: Green's Senator and Spokesperson, Rachel Seiwart.
