The feature here is the Swamp which reflects and celebrates a diverse musical culture. There are the well known headliners Buckwheat Zydeco, Percy Sledge, Sonny Landreth, Lil Buck Senegal [Clifton Chenier] and Henry Gray [whose piano you can hear in Howlin Wolf’s band.] Omar Coleman from Chicago provides some ‘swamp’ with versions of Slim Harpo’s Scratch my Back and Lightning Hopkins Mojo Hand. The individual performers contribute some mighty fine stuff but it is the overall selection of music and artists that put the swamp in the Louisiana Stomp. Within this release itself Trombone Shorty covers a musical rainbow with his own compositions. Allen Toussaint provides piano on his composition “On Your Way Down” the only cover on the album. The Meters are the forefathers of New Orleans funk. After a respite they return with a new line up and a fresh approach to the material. The best album I listened to this year was released in 1994. Mary managed to find a copy of this difficult to get album in New Orleans and said I could play it for you.
