Rudy Van Gelder was born on the 2nd of November in 1924, in Jersey City, New Jersey His amateur radio hobby led him to recording, which he did from his parents home in Hackensack NJ. Rudi had a day job as an optometrist and was introduced to Blue Note president and producer Alfred Lion in 1952, the start of his true recording career. other record companies soon found him and Prestige, Savoy and Verve Records. Rudy Van Gelder used his home studio for early recordings. In the Summer of 1959 Rudi opened a recording studio at Englewood Cliffs a few miles S E of Hackensack. He left his day job In the mid-1950s. Thelonious Monk composed a tribute to Van Gelder's early work called "Hackensack."  -  Since 1999, he has been busy remastering the analog recordings he made several decades ago into 24-bit digital recordings.
