He studied both classical and jazz and played in local marching bands, funk groups, and classical orchestras. Marsalis played first trumpet in the New Orleans Civic Orchestra while in high school. He went to Juilliard when he was 18 and in 1980 he made his first recordings with the Art Blakey Big Band and joined the Jazz Messengers. The rest is jazz history and by 1981, the young trumpeter was the talk of the jazz world.

Later he moved to Sydney and joined a well-known jazz trio called "The 3 out" with Mike Nock on piano. He joined the Dudley Moore Trio in 1962. Alongside his jazz work he quickly became established in session work, Ethnic, Latin and Brazilian music.

Ernest James "Ernie" Watts b. October 23, 1945, is a t, a and sop saxophonist and flutist. He toured with Buddy Rich in the mid-1960s, Later, he visited Africa with Oliver Nelson's group. Watts also played with The Tonight Show Band under Doc Severinsen for 20 years. He is noted for playing "The Mystery Horn" (actually a Conn straight-necked C Melody Saxophone) solo on Frank Zappa's album The Grand Wazoo in 1972. He has also toured with The Rolling Stones, on their 1981 tour. In the mid-1980s he decided to rededicate himself to jazz. He joined bassist Charlie Haden's Quartet West. In 2008, Watts' "Analog Man" won the 7th Annual Independent Music Awards for Best Jazz Album. Ernie also works with vocalist Kurt Elling, whose album "Dedicated To You", featuring Watts, won a Grammy in 2010 for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Their songs marked the beginning of Bossa Nova Hundreds of international performers have recorded more than 400 of his songs.
