Charlie Shavers - b. 3rd August 1917; d. 8/7/1971; trumpet. In 1936 he joined John Kirby's  Sextet as trumpet soloist and arranger (he was only 16 but gave his birthdate as 1917 in order to avoid child labor laws - many biographies still list this date). His arrangements and solos with this band contributed greatly towards making it one of the most commercially successful and widely imitated bands of its day.

He became blind at an early age as a result of poor medical treatment. He was renowned for his onstage vitality, during which virtuoso improvisation was accompanied by comic banter, political ranting, and the ability to play several instruments simultaneously.

Terry Lyne Carrington - b. 4th August 1965; drums. is a jazz drummer, composer, and record producer and clinician. Terri Lyne Carrington, was born in 1965 in Medford, Massachusetts. At 7, Carrington was given a set of drums which had belonged to her grandfather, Matt Carrington, who had played with Fats Waller. After an extensive touring career of over 20 years with luminaries like Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Al Jarreau, Stan Getz, David Sanborn, Joe Sample, Cassandra Wilson, Clark Terry, Dianne Reeves and more, she recently returned to her hometown where she was appointed professor at her alma mater, Berklee College of Music. Terri Lyne also received an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music in 2003.

His best-known group is the Don Burrows Quartet: Don Burrows (multiple woodwind). Don instigated the first jazz studies program in the southern hemisphere at the Sydney Conservatorium. Don Burrows was awarded an MBE. In 2005. Later he toured with a small band including renowned Australian jazz pianist Kevin Hunt. Burrows is now using his photographic images with his music, in a show called Stop, Look and Listen.

Benny Carter - b. 8th August 1907; d. 7/12/2003; alto sax/trumpet/composer/arranger. He was a major figure in jazz from the 1930s to the 1990s, and was recognized as such by other jazz musicians who called him King. He first recorded in 1928 with Charlie Johnson's Orchestra he is the only musician to have recorded in eight different decades.

Oscar Peterson - b.15th August 1925; Canadian pianist/organist/leader He is considered to have been one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. He played thousands of live concerts to audiences worldwide in a career lasting more than 65 years.

Herb Ellis - b. 4th August 1921; d. 28/3/2010 - died of Alzheimer's disease; guitarist best known for his work with the Oscar Peterson trio. With fellow jazz guitarists Barney Kessel, Charlie Byrd and Tal Farlow, he created another ensemble, the Great Guitars.

DeJohnette has led several groups since the early-1970s, including Compost, a jazz-rock group.

He visited and toured Europe frequently in the 1960s, relocating permanently to France in 1968. In the 1970s, he released many recordings with different labels in Europe and Brazil.

Filthy McNasty   3:30 Eddie Jefferson Body and Soul (Horace Silver) 1968 Eddie Jefferson - b. 3rd August 1918; d. 9/5/1979; He is credited with having invented vocalease, a musical style in which lyrics are set to an instrumental composition or solo. After a few hit songs, Eddie Jefferson was shot and killed at Baker's Keyboard Lounge on May 8, 1979, aged 60.

Me and Mrs. Jones   4:13 Earth Wind & Fire Marvin Gaye (Kenny Gamble) Kenny Gamble - b. 11th August 1943; Gamble was discovered and managed by Jerry Ross when Gamble was only 17 years old and they collaborated for many years. Gamble teamed up with Leon Huff (keyboards) for the first time on a recording for Candy & The Kisses. Ross then signed Gamble to Columbia Records  in 1963 as a solo recording artist, releasing "You Don't Know What You Got Until You Lose It". Gamble & Ross & Huff collaborated on the hit song "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me." By 1975, Philadelphia International and the Philadelphia soul genre it helped define had largely eclipsed Motown and the Motown Sound in popularity, and Gamble and Huff were the premiere producers of soul. Gill Evans arr. 17/12/47 LA Claude Thornhill - b. 10th August 1909; d.1/ 7/1965; piano/leader. He was recognised as an extraordinary talent and when aged 16, he and clarinetist Artie Shaw started their careers at the Golden Pheasant in Cleveland, Ohio with the Austin Wiley Orchestra. Thornhill and Shaw went to New York together in 1931. Although the Thornhill band was originally a sophisticated dance band, it became reknown for its many superior jazz musicians and for Thornhill's and Gil Evan's innovative arrangements.

Led his own territory bands out of Texas in the 1930s and 1940s, He led a group at the Palace Theatre in New York in 1949. In the 1950s he returned to active performance, playing in small groups in the 1950s through the 1970s.

After serving as a U.S. Navy band leader, he played with the Stars of Swing. Along with saxophonist Dexter Gordon bassist Charles Mingus, and drummer Chico Hamilton, he helped keep bebop alive in Los Angeles.

Ben Sidran p) 2004 Ben Sidran - b. 14th August 1943; vocals/writer. Sidran was raised in Wisconsin,  where in 1961, he became a member of The Ardells along with Steve Miller and Boz Scaggs. When Miller and Scaggs left Wisconsin for the West Coast and stardom, Sidran stayed behind to earn a degree in English literature. After graduating in 1966, Sidran enrolled at Uni in Sussex to pursue a degree in American Studies. Sidran rejoined Miller in an English recording studio the next year, playing on the album "Children of the Future." He was a session musician for Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Peter Frampton, etc. Sidran has been referred to by the Chicago Sun Times as a "Renaissance man cast adrift in a modern world," and by the Times of London as "The first existential jazz rapper," in reference to his preferred mix of humorous, erudite commentary while playing grooves and bebop. He continues to lecture at Universities, most recently on the subject of "Jews, Music and the American Dream."
