Early work with Dizzy Gillespie and Max Roach. With The Jazz Messengers till 1956. In the 60's he briefly with Miles Davis, then session work with Blue Note, where Hank produced over 20 albums. In the 70's he worked with many top musicians but formed a particularly productive partnership with trumpeter Lee Morgan. Hank retired in the mid 70's.

Coles spent his early career playing with R&B groups, Eddie Vinson from 1948 to 1951, Bull Moose Jackson 1952, and James Moody from 1956 to 1958. He played with Gil Evans Orchestra between 1958 and 1964. After this with Charles Mingus in his sextet then Herbie Hancock from1968 to1969, Ray Charles 1969-1971. Worked with Duke Ellington from 1971 to1974, Art Blakey in 1976 and Thad Jones from 1985 to 1986.

Pianist, composer, arranger, teacher, and jazz theoretician. For five decades, he has been one of the most successful small-group leaders in jazz. He began playing piano at the age of three. Many great musicians cite Ahmad Jamal as a major influence, especially in use of rhythm and space as well as his innovative use of multi-tonal melodic lines and his unique extended 'vamps'. Jamal's style has changed steadily over time - from the lighter, breezy style heard on his 1950s recordings to the Caribbean stylings of the 1970s and onto the large open voicing and bravura-laden playing of the nineties. The French government named him an Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in June 2007. Ahmed Jamal continues to tour extensively with his trio.

Married to singer Helen Merrill in 1948, for only a few years. Then from mainstream Jazz he moved into Latin music in the 60's working with Tito Puente and Tito Rodriguez. Aaron Sachs has written a hit song for Tito Rodriguez, titled "El Mundo De Las Locas" and also composed for drum legend Louie Bellson.

Tom Ranier p; Richard Simon b; Steve Houghton d. 2005 Richard Simon - b. 5th June 1949, Richard picked up the bass at the age of 30. He then studied with the legendary bassist, Red Callender, and began working with LA's elder jazz elite, including Buddy Collette and Plas Johnson. These days Richard plays traditional jazz with trombonist Dan Barrett, vocalist Rebecca Kilgore and guitarist Eddie Erickson; mainstream jazz with Nancy Wilson's pianist, Llew Matthews, and flute virtuoso, Sam Most; and be-bop with vibraphonists Dave Pike and Terry Gibbs.  

 

Mack David - b. 5th July 1912; d. 30/12/1993; Lyricist: had a career spanning from the early 1940s through the early 1970s. He is credited with writing lyrics and or music for over one thousand songs; Candy; Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White; Cinderella; I Don't Care If the Sun Don't Shine; Tara's Theme; La Vie en Rose; Walk on the Wild Side; I'm Just a Lucky So-And-So, etc. Numerous songs for stage and screen, including TV series such as, Casper the Friendly Ghost, 77 Sunset Strip, Hawaiian Eye, Bourban Street Beat, Surfside 6 and "This Is It" (for the 1960's Bugs Bunny Show. But perhaps David's most popular lyrics were those for "La Vie En Rose", which he translated from the French version by by Édith Piaf. "La Vie En Rose"  was a big hit for Louis Armstrong and over 80 other musicians internationally.

Mince played with Joe Haymes from 1929 to 1934, Red Norvo, Glen Miller, Ray Noble and Bob Crosby, before joining Tommy Dorsey in 1937 till 1941. After an extended stint in the U.S. military (1941-45), Mince worked as a studio musician for several decades. He toured Europe in 1983, and continued to play at jazz revival festivals until his retirement due to ill health. Johnny Mince whose real name was John Muenzenberger never received much recognition beyond that of his fellow musicians.

Alvino Rey b. 1st July 1911 - d. 24/2/2004 Played steel guitar, guitar and worked as a band leader. Rey made his professional debut in 1927 as a member of Elvin Jones' band, playing banjo. He switched to guitar in 1929 and by the 30's his pedal steel playing started and Alvino Rey became a pioneering force behind the popularity of the amplified guitar. In early 1935 he was even recruited by the Gibson guitar manufacturing company to develop a prototype pickup. He continued performing well into his 80's.

Sue first played piano before switching to the drums. She was Judy Collin's touring drummer from 1969 to 1973. Later Sue worked with Gill Evans from 1969 to 1982. Now she plays in various New York orchestra's and with a huge list of jazz musicians.

Worked with Hank Jones, Gary Bartz, and Kenny Barron. Plus a few young jazz geniuses like Christian McBride, Stefon Harris and Mokoto Ozone; and late greats like Ray Brown. Had three CD releases since 1997 - and a well-deserved Canadian Juno award nomination and US Indie honourable mention. Melissa Walker is now preparing to record her fifth CD, when Melissa isn't touring she is the Saturday-night headliner with her talented trio at the upscale Short Hills Hilton, in New Jersey.

At the age of 17, started playing and later he joined Benny Moten's orchestra in 1923, where he led the reed section until 1931. He formed Harlan Leonard and his Rockets who worked regularly till World War ll.

In Chicago ln the 1950's, he played with Johnny Tate and Carmen McRae. Then relocated to NYC in 1955, where his compositions were recorded by Sarah Vaughan and various others. In 1964, after moving to LA where he became Nancy Wilson's arranger and pianist and later did session work till the 70's.

Most of his career was spent recording solo albums. His career lasted for decades and by the1980's Hartman still gave several performances for Jazz festivals, television, and radio. He died at 60. 

 

Bandstand Boogie   2:46 Pat Longo & His Big Band The Hit List (William Stuart Johnson) Longann Records #2000 92187 As heard on the soundtrack or The Soprano's 2005 John Heard - b. 3rd July 1938; John began playing bass at fourteen and at the age of sixteen he started his professional career in a band with Tommy Turrentine tpt, Booker Ervin sax, J.C. Moses d's and Horace Parlan on piano. Entering the Air Force in 1958 he served in Germany until in 1961. John resumed his music career which took him first to Buffalo and then on to California with Jon Hencricks of Lambert, Hencricks and Ross fame until 1965. Appearing on over 150 albums by 1988 John “retired” from music and devoted himself full time to painting and sculpting. He has painted, sketched or sculpted portraits of many Jazz legends but the music kept calling him back and after four years, John started playing again and has spent the last decade or so pursuing both careers.

He is an American pop and jazz trumpeter. He is best known for leading the NBC Orchestra on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Starting in 1952, Doc Severinsen played first trumpet in the band, which was then directed by Skitch Henderson. Severinsen took over as bandleader in 1967 and soon became noted for his flashy fashions.

Guest Jack Sheldon tpt, voc.  2007. Tierney Sutton was born on June 28th, 1963 She is a three-time Grammy Nominee for "Best Jazz Vocal Album" with The Tierney Sutton Band. The band is an incorporated unit and makes all musical as well business decisions together. She has been a member of the Baha'i Faith since 1981 and explains her band's arranging style as "based on the principle of consultation." The band is very much run on Baha'i principles. 

 

Irving Caesar - b. 4th July 1895; d. 18/12/1996. Lyrics: Sometimes I'm Happy,  Crazy Rhythm, I Want to be Happy, Is It True What They Say about Dixie?
