He is currently on the staff of the jazz program at the Banff Centre of Fine Arts, Canada, and Drummers Collective, New York City. It's been said that he is the "John Coltrane of the drums.."

June 23, 1923  d. July 27, 2009 A pianist, composer and theorist. He is considered one of the first jazz musicians to contribute to general music theory with a theory of harmony based on Jazz rather than European music, in his book, The Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization in 1953. While working on the theory, Russell was also applying its principles to his compositions. Russell's first famous composition was for the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra, the two-part "Cubano Be, Cubano Bop" in 1947 and part of that band's pioneering experiments in fusing bebop and Cuban jazz elements.

Currently Joe also teaches in New York City. 

 

Lazy Afternoon   3:38 Morgana King A Taste of Honey (J Moross/J Latouch) Mainstream Records #6015 arrangements by Torrie Zito 1964 Morgana King - b. 4th June 1930 in New York City, she won a scholarship to the Metropolitan School of Music. Her professional singing career began at age sixteen and in 1953, a record label executive took interest after being impressed with the unique phrasing and four octave range.Three years later in 1956, her first album was released. 14 albums in the 60's 5 films in the 70's  many TV Shows and CDs over 30 recordings. Morgana King announced her retirement from performing on Friday, December 10, 1993.

June 26, 1937. He played piano, tuba, and euphonium early on but settled on bass in the mid-'50s. After working regularly with Gigi Gryce (1958), Red Garland, and Roy Haynes, he was a member of the John Coltrane Quartet for much of 1961. Since that time, Workman has been both an educator (serving on the faculty of music schools including the University of Michigan) and a working musician, and has played with numerous legendary jazz musicians.

December 19, 2000. He free lanced in Chicago until he joined Cab Calloway's band. Milt Hinton was also renown as a wonderful bass plucker and slapper. He twice received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts for his work as a jazz educator: a music fellowship in 1977 and an NEA Jazz Master award in 1993. According to The US Jazz Discography, Hinton is the most-recorded jazz musician of all time, having appeared on 1,174 recordings. He's also a fine photographer and known as one of the best friends of jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong. Hinton played a rare Gofriller Double Bass during his latter career. The old bass was found in pieces in a cellar and a musical agent arranged the purchase for Hinton from the family in Italy. In his autobiography "Bass Line" he describes it's tone as magnificent and humbly said it was one of the reasons for his long success in the New York recording studios during the 50's, and 60's.

August 3, 1986 played with Jimmy Lunceford's band from 1933 until Lunceford's death in 1947. R & B in the early 50's left music became an undertaker and recorded again 1n 70's and 80's. Jimmy Lunceford b. June 6, 1902 – d. July 12, 1947. He became proficient on all reed instruments, but he preferred the alto saxophone. A great bandleader of the swing era, in 1927 he organised a student band, the Chicasaw Syncopators whose name was changed to the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra when it first began touring. Accepting a job at The Cotton Club in 1934.The Cotton Club had already featured Calloway and Ellington,Lunceford's orchestra, with their tight musicianship and often outrageous humor in their music and lyrics made an ideal band for the Harlem club, and Lunceford's reputation began to steadily grow. On July 12, 1947, while playing in Seaside Oregon,Lunceford collapsed and died during an autograph session, aged 45. Perhaps from cardiac arrest or was it food poisoning?

In 1959, Mundy moved to Paris returning in the 60's continued writing well into the 70's.  

 

Voo It   3:00 Helen Humes Bootin' the Boogie the Birth of Rock 'n' Roll, Vol. 2 (Disc One) (Frosty) 2006 Helen Humes b. 23rd June 1913 d. September 9, 1981 a teenaged blues singer, made first recording in 1927 and was band vocalist with Count Basie. She moved to Hawaii, then oz in 1964 back to US to care for her mum had a musical comeback in 73 and stayed busy up until her death.  

 

'Round Midnight   3:12 Thelonious Monk The Complete Blue Note Recordings [Disc 1] (Thelonious Monk) Blue Note #7243 8 30363 2 5 Thelonious Monk p; George Taft tpt; Sahib Shihab t sax; Bob Paige b; Art Blakey d. 21/11/1947/1994 Sahib Shihab was born Edmond Gregory on the 23rd of June 1925 and died on 24th of October 1989 Sahib Shihab was a jazz saxophonist, baritone, alto, and soprano and also a flautist. He played with Roy eldridge and Fletcher Henderson in the 40's. Plus Thelonious Monk  sessions in New York City. Later he toured Europe with Quincy Jones. Sahib Shihab settled in Scandinavia and married a Danish girl in the 60's Worked with Art Farmer in 70's.

Dave Grusin pianist, arranger and composer was born on June 26, 1934 Grusin has composed many film scores and he has won numerous awards for his soundtrack work. There are still 35 Grusin CD titles which are currently available.

Seymour Kaufman on the 14th June 1929 in New York City; d. 18th November 2004. Pianist and composer: Before beginning his fabled Broadway career, he led the Cy Coleman Trio. With Caroline Leigh collaborated on Wildcat the Broadway debut of Lucielle Ball. In 1964, Coleman met Dorothy Fields their first project was Sweet Charity, until their partnership was cut short by Fields' death in 1974. Coleman remained prolific in the late 1970s. I love My Wife, On The Twentieth Century, Barnum, The will rodgers Follies, The Life, Coleman was on the ASCAP Board of Directors for many years and also served as their Vice Chairman Writer. Valida was born into a family devoted to music, she learned to play cello, bass, banjo, violin, mandolin, harp, accordion, clarinet, trumpet, and saxophone at professional levels by the time she was 15. She also sang and danced. eventually she began focusing on the trumpet, Valaida quickly became so famous that she was named “Little Louis” after Louis Armstrong. She played concerts throughout the USA, Europe and China. Her most successful period was in the 1930’s, when she became the toast of London and Paris.

Many groups in 80's and 90's. In 2007, Clarke's own Roxboro Entertainment Group offers scholarships to students in financial need who excel in music. Still recording Toys of Men in 2007, a 13-track CD that examines the issues of war.

NYC 28/12/1933  Ben Pollack 22nd June b. 1903; d. 6/7/1971; drums/leader; Pollack was largely self taught as a drummer, and was afforded the opportunity to become the drummer for the New Orleans Rhythm Kings. With Gil Rodin and a young arranger-trombonist Glenn Miller. Plus on clarinet, a sixteen-year-old Benny Goodman began working with Pollack in 1925 as well. In 1926, Pollack recorded for Victor. Many of his records were good sellers. From about 1928, with involvement with Irving Mills, members of Pollack's band moonlighted at Plaza-ARC and recorded a vast quantity of hot dance and out-and-out jazz. hit by the depression in 1929. Toured US in the 30's Appeared in a couple of movies. In 1992, Ben Pollack was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame.

Clive Powell on the 26th June 1943; vocal/keyboards/composer His first group was The Domino's and Clive also worked at Butlins Holiday Camp in Wales till he left for London aged 16. With Billy Fury and The Blue Flames. In September 1963 the band recorded its debut album "Rhythm And Blues At the Flamingo" recorded live at The Flamingo Club featured hit single "Yeh Yeh" which spent two weeks at No. 1 on the UK singles chart in 1965. Another hit "The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde" also hit the charts in the UK. Each sold over one million copies and he's been recording ever since. Georgie Fame was a core member of Van Morrison's band.

Melbourne 20 - 21/10/2005 ABC Studio 345 Southbank. 2006 Bernie McGann - b. 22nd June 1937 in Granville in Syd, first performed at the El Rocco in Kings Cross in Syd. Played alto sax with Sydney rock -soul band Southern Comfort in the 60's and 70's. Led Jazz trios and Quartets and won Aria awards. In 1998 Bernie McGann won the Don Banks Music Award, the first time it has been awarded to a non-classical musician/composer. Has recently helped launch his biography - "Bernie McGann: A Life in Jazz" by Geoff Page (Kardooraire Press).

Give Me the Simple Life   2:16 Dakota Staton Live At Milestones (H Ruby/R Bloom) Quicksilver Records #6100 Dakota Staton b. 3rd June 1932 d. 10/5/2007 Dakota Staton started as a vocalist with the Joe Wespray Orchestra, a popular Pittsburgh orchestra. She next spent several years in the nightclub circuit. While in New York, she was noticed singing at a nightclub called the Baby Grand by Dave Cavanaugh, a producer for Capitol Records. She won "Most Promising New Comer" award in 1955. made recordings through the 60's relocating to Britain in 1965. Back in the United States in the 70's her final studio date, "A Packet of Love Letters" then Dakota Staton's health declined slowly but steadily in the years to follow, and she died on April 10, 2007, at the age of 76.

He joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers at age 21. The question with Harrison is not what he can do, but is there anything he can’t do? So far he has mastered and influenced everything he has touched. Harrison also writes works for major orchestras.
