Confined to a small group setting with a fine but uncredited array of musicians behind him. 1984 Born on May 30, 1909 in Chicago the King of Swing. He played with his first pit band at the age of 11.When Benny was 16, he was hired by the Ben Pollack band and moved to Los Angeles. In 1929, Benny left the Ben Pollack band to participate in recording sessions and radio shows in New York City. The rest is jazz history.

Pedersen remained very active until his sudden death in 2005 at the age of 58.

As well as Lana Turner and Ava Gardner, his wives included actresses Doris Dowling and Evelyn Keyes as well as Elizabeth Kern, the daughter of composer Jerome Kern, and Kathleen Winsor, author of the novel "Forever Amber." His first two marriages were to Jane Carns and Margaret Allen. He was married in most cases less than two years and often publicly disparaged his wives as dimwits. At 13, he bought a saxophone, then left home three years later to play professionally. By the mid-1920s, he had switched to clarinet. In 1938, Shaw hired Billie Holiday, and she recorded one of his enduring songs, "Any Old Times." Crowds were hostile to her appearing with a white band.

In the 1930s Ladnier co-led a band with Sidney Bechet called The New Orleans Feetwarmers, Ladnier's best recordings.

Born on May 18, 1922, Denmark one of the founding fathers of be-bop music and truly one of the finest-ever jazz trombonists. Winding's first burst of fame occurred during his year with Stan Kenton's Orchestra (1946-1947), during which his phrasing influenced and was adopted by the other trombonists, leading to a permanent change in the Kenton sound. Most of Winding's sessions are not currently available on CD. d. in New York on May 6, 1983, just shy of his 61st birthday.
