NEW - The Escalators • Wrapped In Plastic

Taking inspiration from some of the artistic concepts of master filmmaker David Lynch The Escalators carve out an mesmerising conceptual approach to their music making.

Composer and bandleader Kynan Robinson involves both the ideas of reality and fantasy into the sometimes beautiful, sometimes unsettling music that is featured on Wrapped In Plastic.

The Escalators consist of a veritable who’s who of the Melbourne music scene with all performers playing in dozens of other significant Melbourne bands including City City City, Adam Simmons Toy Band, CW Stoneking, The Antipodeans, Malakat, the Ned Collette band, the Andrea Keller Quartet and introduces the astounding talents of DJ Element.

"... a well-integrated journey in sound. Horns give a sense of space and significance, while DJ Element adds snippets of voice and "bird calls'' that are not out of place. This is a surreal body of work worth unwrapping. File between: The Necks, DJ Shadow". Sunday Herald Sun

NEW - Rob Burke & Tony Gould • Here

Burke and Gould have spent much time debating technical aspects, styles and musical concepts of their new release Here - where every note has its own reason for existing.

Rob Burke (Sax/Clarinet) and Tony Gould (Piano) first recorded in the duet format in ‘96 (Gateway) followed by A Tin Roof For The Rain in ’99. They also perform together regularly with a Quartet (Tony Floyd-Drums/Nick Haywood-Bass) for the last 15 years. During this time the pair have created a steadfast foundation of musical understanding and expression.

“Variations of tempo and mood and a seemingly telepathic ability to complement each other make for stimulating listening." 4 stars, MAG (Music Australia Guide)

“… carefully crafted explorations into the melodic beauty, space, timbre and dynamic variations of reeds and piano by players whose long friendship is evident.” 4 stars, Sunday Herald Sun

“... an empathetic, melodic and tender album that reflects the saxophonist's and pianist's longtime playing partnership.” ABC Radio National, The Daily Planet

“… to die for” 4 stars, The Age, Green Guide

NEW - Anton Delecca (moonlights with The Bamboos...shhh) • Lost City

The Anton Delecca Quartet released their Jazzhead debut Lost City earlier this year, making album of the week at PBS FM and gaining momentous airplay on Triple R FM and Eastside as well as Satellite Radio nationally, recieved great reviews in MAG- the JB Hi Fi Music Australia Guide, Sunday Herald Sun, The Weekend Australian, The Age and AllAboutJazz New York.

We hope you take time to hear music from Anton Delecca, who when not leading his super cool jazz Quartet is touring around the globe with his "night job" performing the funky heavy soul sounds with The Bamboos.

Homage was Winner of the Australian Jazz "Bell" Award for Best Album Of The Year 2010.

Pinnacles Music

If You Were There

Kristin Berardi and James Sherlock

Berardi weaves scat passages into many of these songs, which together with her expressive phrasing brings off an individuality on standards Alone Together, Like Someone In Love and a lively You Say You Care. Sherlock's acoustic guitar inserts clever melodic embroidery but always maintains a rhythmic pulse throughout. Of the originals, I'm Just Another Girl seems to work best, with rippling guitar chords under a quick moving melody at a slower tempo. Review by - John McBeath

Vitamin Records

‘Taking Time Out’ is Juzzie Smith’s 3rd album and follows on from the breakout success of his 2007 album ‘Happy Daze’. Both albums mark the journey of this virtuoso music man’s quest to find integrity, love and balance in his art and life. As a young father and tired of smoke-filled late nights on the pub circuit Juzzie made a conscious decision to take his music to the people and the streets, by busking mostly at local markets on NSW north coast. Each time he played, the crowds got bigger. He has gone on to become a true grassroots phenomenon, selling thousands of CDs, and is now a festival circuit favourite, loved for his energetic and awe-inspiring live performances.

From the release entitled My Sauce Good

My Sauce Good is a tasty acoustic group playing addictive French Swing, original tunes, soulful Latin-American folksong, a haunting Hebrew lullaby, Bohemian Jazz from the 1920’s onwards and contemporary songs given a new lease of life... Fun, flavoursome and stylish with a gypsy edge.

The Musicians: Argentinean-born chanteuse Laura Brozky sings in English, French, Italian, Hebrew and Spanish. She brings an international flavour to the trio acquired through a lifetime spent residing in various parts of the globe. Australian-born of Dutch descent, Dirk Kruithof plays a spirited swinging guitar accompaniment. He has played, toured and composed extensively with Sydney legends ‘Waiting for Guinness’. He arranges much of the material. Bulgarian born Violinist Veren Grigorov studied at the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, Vienna and Hannover. Ivo Neame Quartet - Birdbrained

“Mutli-layered opus from multi-talented composer / improvisor Ivo Neame. Caught in the Light of Day captures some of the most offbeat and intricate sounds around. Arrangements take unexpoected turns into beautiful absraction and the soloing has a business-as-usual brilliance. These seven originals are so densely packed with good stuff, fresh things unfold with every listen”. MOJO ****

Musicians:

Ivo Neame – piano

Jim Hart – vibes

Jasper Hoiby – double bass

James Maddren – drums

TROYKA - Noonian Soong

“A brand new band with brand new material, a 3 piece who constanly mix loops with grooves yet have a good acoustic feel throughout”. BBC Radio 3 – Jazz Line-up. “They’re a cerebral jam band with a funky edge and a relentless drive, with guitarist Chris Montague borrowing much of John Scofield’s angular distorto dialect”. TIMEOUT

Chris Montague – guitar / loops

Kit Downes – organ  &  Joshua Blackmore - drums

TAMCO - River Deep Mountain High

Tammy Payne - Vocals

Jim Barr – Bass

Dan Moore – Hammond

Neil Smith – Guitar

Dylan Howe – Drums

Led by singer Tammy Payne (Smith And Mighty, Jukes) and bassist Jim Barr (Portishead, Get the Blessing) Tamco states influences as diverse as Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Bob Dylan to Wayne Shorter, Hermeto Pascoal and Miles Davis yet have captured a sound of breathtaking orginality. Featuring guitarist Neil Smith (Liftmen), Keyboardist Dan Moore (Pee Wee Ellis, Andy Shepperd, Maceo Parker) and drummer Dylan Howe (Nick Cave, Damon Albarn, Portishead, Robert Wyatt, Gabrielle, Paul McCartney and Stan Sulzman) Tamco have developed a highly original blend of sounds that reflect the band member’s unique histories and tastes.

Dave Stapleton Quintet - Images

Dave Stapleton – piano

Ben Waghorn – Saxophones

Jonny Bruce - trumpet

Paula Gardiner - double bass

Elliot Bennett – drums

Dave Stapleton Quintet (DSQ) are one of the finest outfits on a British jazz scene overcrowded with talent. Now, with highly successful festival appearances in Cannes, Budapest, Zagreb, Cork, Bratislava and Belgrade under their belt, the rest of Europe is catching on. Imagine music as approachable and sophisticated as Keith Jarrett or EST or the Bad Plus. Now add that to the energy of the Jazz Messengers or Cannonball Adderley. That’s DSQ.

Paula Gardiner - Beneath Roja Skies

Paula Gardiner (bass, acoustic guitar, flute)

Lee Goodall (saxophones, flutes, percussion)

Mark O’Connor (drums, percussion)

Featuring Paula on double bass, guitar and flute alongside regular trio partners saxophonist LeeGoodall and drummer Mark O’Connor, Hot Lament is an album of delightful contrasts. One of Britain’s most lyrical and melodic bass players, Paula Gardiner is also an accomplished classical guitarist and flautist

Kevin Figes - The Grind

Kevin Figes (alto sax)

Jim Blomfield (piano)

Riaan Vosloo (bass)

Tim Giles (drums)

Circular Motion succeeds in covering those bases but does it through one man’s vision of his music. It’s a highly personal record but also a group performance, for Kevin’s been playing with pianist Jim Blomfield and Riaan Vosloo for several years. Amazingly Tim Giles only joined for this session, as the group convey remarkable levels of empathy and sensitivity to each other. Circular Motion flows like its title suggests. Lyrical, melodic music with a strong rhythmic sense fired by a shared love of Jazz. Knowing where you’re going means knowing where you’ve been. That hits the spot with me!

Geoff Eales Trio - IOLO’s Dance

Geoff Eales Trio featuring Martin France and Chris Laurence

Geoff Eales is regarded as one of Europe’s most inspirational jazz pianists and composers. In March 2009 Geoff launches a new trio with the legendary line-up of Chris Laurence and Martin France which looks set to take his career and profile to an all time high.

Mark Lockheart - Long Way Gone

Mark Lockheart is one of the most distinctive and creative musicians on the current British music scene. As a saxophonist and composer, his work often defies categorisation and crosses the boundaries of the jazz, new music and folk worlds.

MARK LOCKHEART GROUP
