Phil has a wealth of experience.
His first position was a cadetship in journalism for the Sydney Morning Herald which he completed before travelling in Europe. He worked in the film industry for a while - you will see him acknowledged as one of the Assistant Directors of the Mad Max films, for instance, a job he describes as liaising between the Director and actors and the blue collar people. He lived on the South Coast of New South Wales, where he was involved in the Green and Anti-Nuclear movements coming to the Northern Rivers specifically to attend the Media Course at what was then the Northern Rivers College of Advanced Education - later to morph into Southern Cross University - where he distinguished himself by attaining the highest pass ever given out by that institution.
He became a breakfast radio presenter with the North Coast ABC - 2NR - where he was commended for his interviews with a range of public and private figures, then Prime Minister Bob Hawke and visiting Pentagon officials among them.
At the same time he was very active in promoting local musicians and in organising many of the venues and events in the Northern Rivers area. He also helped start a local Newspaper - The North Coaster - as well as being involved with this area's oldest Community Radio Station, 2NCRFM, in Lismore.
In 1991 Phil retired from the ABC after he was made seriously ill by a rare virus. Fortunately Phil survived, though only just - but he was left with scarring to his brain and very profound short term memory loss. This is a disability that impacts very strongly on an existential level, but though he is not able to lay down new memories, Phil's quick wit and extraordinary mind are still extremely active. He loves making puns and constantly is at word play.
Phil is an extraordinary soul and one that has impacted on many people very deeply. He is a skilled presenter and his passion for music makes for really enjoyable listening.
