Jim Dickinson & writer Stanley Booth put together The Dixie Flyers in 1970
featuring Charlie Freeman, Mike Utley, Tommy McClure & Sammy Creason. They became Jerry Wexler’s house band at Criteria Studios in Miami.

In 1971, Jim Dickinson collaborated with Ry Cooder on ‘Into the Purple Valley’, the first of a series of solo albums & soundtracks with the brilliant guitarist.
In 1972, he issued his first solo album ‘Dixie Fried’; around that time he also formed Mud Boy & The Neutrons, a legendary local band featuring Sid Selvidge, Lee Baker & Jimmy Crosswait.

Much of Dickinson’s reputation rests on his production of Big Star’s ‘Third/Sister Lovers’, which has been described as “the sound of a band falling apart”. It wasn’t released till 1992, but bootlegs assured it’s reputation among a new generation of bands like The Replacements. He worked several times with Alex Chilton after that.

Willy got Jim Dickinson to produce his ‘Horse Of A Different Colour’ 1999. It featured many of Dickinson’s cohorts – David Hood, Roger Hawkins & Spooner Oldham, members of the Neutrons & his sons Luther & Cody.
